Each non-conforming product found in-process or at the end of the manufacturing process costs money. Component Parts that vary from the design and build specification cause variation in the final assembled product, variation that can result in a marginal or a non-conforming product. e.g., variation in gear diameter (smaller than design nominal value results in noisy gears; too large a diameter results in mating gears binding up, or chipped teeth - leading to particle contamination and early wear warranty costs).
