Component Parts that vary from the design and build specification cause variation in the final assembled product, variation that can result in a marginal or a non-conforming product. e.g., variation in gear diameter (smaller than design nominal value results in noisy gears; too large a diameter results in mating gears binding up, or chipped teeth  - leading to particle contamination and early wear warranty costs).
